Obama had no problem being in the eye of a camera or a microphone several times a day.
Of course he wasn't working on anything and he did have the time, especially if it was race based event/incident or stumping for Clinton/loser.

In case you haven't noticed, when Obama speaks it is either in the Rose Garden in front of the White House press or in the White House press room, also in front of the White House press, followed by questions. We all know how much Trump loves this back and forth with the press. BTW, he hasn't had a formal press conference since July.
