I drove down the day before you did, and I got hammered with traffic when I got to South Carolina. For some silly reason, I thought that the day after Christmas being a holiday would be a good day to travel, NOT!!!!
It has been my experience that you have to time your trip to avoid the DC area. In my case I leave at 2am and I am through there by 6am.
When hurricane Mathew played havoc on I95, I went into PA and picked up I81 and eventually went through Atlanta, but that trip was two hours longer.
Being a snowbird, I'm thinking of picking up a cheap second car and keeping it down here and just fly back and forth when necessary. With I95, you never know what to expect, I've had some very good trips and some terrible ones too.
