He was supposed to win all right. This was the R party fighting the D party with a "rogue" who didn't "really" represent the "parties beliefs" giving them plausible deniability of being "racists" when/if he won. Let's hope it wasn't just another ruse...
That's what the primary IS...throw out all kinds of candidate "personalities" and see which one "sticks". The people wanted the Trump personality.
It didn't matter...ALL the candidates were working for "the system", the corruption will go on.
