You need to do some READING about what happens in countries with more than two parties. What happens is to get elected they need to form coalitions.
While, I voted for TRUMP a case could be made that Sanders ran as a third party candidate and he cost Hillary the election. Ross Perot likely cost Bush the election.

You may want to see the CNN show, now on demand, called the path to the white house. It has always been
dirty or if you prefer corrupt. Same as OBAMA did everything he could to promote his CHOSEN successor, the same was true of TRUMAN (D) who treated IKE (R) like CRAP. Ike chose Nixon, his VP as his CHOSEN successor and he did everything he could to see that Nixon won.
Once the smoke cleared, IKE did much to help Kennedy.
