They are "public figures"...there are different rules for them. That's why Trump can't sue everyone who says something he thinks is false. But a private citizen can.
Public figures are open to criticism. They CAN sue...don't get me wrong. But it's just not worth it...and it would open them up to investigation...and they DON'T want that...because just about all "public figures" have things to hide.
