Not to take sides in this because I'm no expert and I don't know. But, homosexuality was considered a mental illness and was listed in the DSM and several courses of treatment were recommended until 1973 when due to political pressure from the gay community it was removed.

There were no tests, no reasons other than empirical evidence. I don't believe that this has ever been the case with any other disease in history.

Again, I don't want to get into an argument over whether homosexuality is a disease or not. I'm simply stating the facts and noting that it was mostly political pressure that caused the removal.
