Yes, it was an inept job of searching. But guns were not allowed and bullets were still flying everywhere. So how did banning guns prevent this?

I would posit that the first people that pulled out guns were led to believe that they were the only ones with a gun in the place. Or, it was an organized plot by several people to sneak guns in and shoot the place up, in which case, the unarmed people had no chance.

We'll learn more as we know more about exactly what happened. But the bottom line is that banning guns, once again, did not stop a gun crime.

The same as banning guns did not stop the Ft Lauderdale shooter.
