A word of caveat...Medicare will not cover the cost if the facility you went to is farther than the one closer to you. The ER doctor erred in sending me to a hospital that was farther than the other one. So I was sicced with a bill for $1300 for the excess mileage over 100 miles. 100 miles is all they will cover for an ambulance service, no matter what.
I took this through the four-level appeal process -and lost. This is one ambulance situation where Medicare simply will not budge - not even if the patient were totally unconscious.
