The Newtown school shooter was a "legal" gun owner until he open up the gun case in his house, killed his mother and then went to the school and killed all those kids.

That weapon was NOT considered an "assault rifle." An assault rifle is one that shoots automatically, by producing multiple shots per one single finger squeeze of the trigger. If the rifle is not bolt action or lever action, it will most likely be semiautomatic. Even shotguns are semiautomatic. Any weapon that provides multiple shots per trigger squeeze is owned legally ONLY if a special Federal permit is obtained. Yes, some drug gangs in the cities own ILLEGALLY obtained automatic weapons. Key word "illegal."
