AM as opposed to FM is notorious for poor reception due to "static". This catch all word "static" can be from electrical appliances, dimmer switches, outside power lines, on and on. Thus the invention of FM. That being said, and depending on your radio, sometimes a simple wire attached to the AM ant input helps greatly. Again your radio may not be so equipped. Try relocating the radio in different parts of the home and see if the intensity of the static changes. You might even consider buying a quality AM radio with an antenna input to increase the signal to noise ratio
Being a Rush Limbaugh fan I have to get good AM reception also (but we won't go there cause its political ;D
