Frank, I had my husband install pull-outs on all of my lower cabinets as well. I have a Bougainvillea (the smallest of the designers) and have a very small kitchen. The upper, fixed half-shelf in the lower cabinets is a joke! Really, what on earth did they expect we could place there and not have to get on hands and knees to retrieve? We had the one wooden sliding shelf on the lower portion, but they were really thick and with the side spacers used for installation, wasted a lot of valuable space.
I went to Lowe’s and bought from their off-the-shelf line of sliding shelves. I have stock sized cabinets, so their sizes worked perfectly for me. The ones that I selected were a combo upper-and-lower sliding shelf, so only one installation was necessary for both shelves. They are a study, metal shelf with silent glides. After 6.5 years, they still work perfectly. The only one I couldn’t get at Lowe’s, I ordered online from Bed Bath and Beyond. That was for my skinny, 9-inch opening cabinet. They had a sheet pan and tray sliding shelf that fits perfectly and holds my sheet pans, cooling racks and several cutting boards.
My husband installed them himself one Saturday. (He was still working at the time.) I spent less money and feel that I got better sliding shelves than the wooden ones I see advertised in the newspaper. I love, love, love them.
Go with your wife on this one. She knows what she’s talking about! If you would like to see them to gauge whether you would want to go that route, PM me and on one of your trips up to The Villages, we can arrange for you to come by and see them.
