For those who do not recognize him, this is George Lincoln Rockwell, founder of the American Nazi Party.

He was very much a "true believer" who headed a "Stormtrooper Barracks" full of Brown Shirt "troopers" in Arlington, Virginia.

The Secret Service Protective Intelligence Division maintained periodic surveillance of the Barracks to identify new members of the group and evaluate their potential danger to the President.

On August 25, 1967, Rockwell was shot and killed while leaving a laundromat in Arlington, Virginia. John Patler, a former member of Rockwell's group, was convicted of the murder and served eight years in prison. Hearing of his son's death, Rockwell's 78-year-old father said: "I am not surprised at all. I've expected it for quite some time."

By coincidence, I was on a temporary assignment in the Intelligence Division at the time of the assassination, and watched the story unfold on local television. Several agents were dispatched to the scene of the murder to assist local police in investigating the case because we had extensive files on members of the group.

Amazingly, because Rockwell had an honorable discharge from the Navy, he was authorized to be buried in a National Military Cemetery. However, demonstrators prevented the hearse from entering the property, and later he was cremated.

Rockwell was an inspiration for David Duke, a current White Supremacist Leader (KKK,) who was in high school when Rockwell was killed.
