Donna, totally agree that comparisons between these states would be a joke, but I did expect a living wage -- sorry, but $12.50/hour is not a living wage, especially when I factor in commute costs to Ocala, clothing and lunches. I knew that I would take a large pay cut moving here -- I expected 50%. I did not expect 90% with no benefits.
One thing I have heard from several local employers is they have no reason to pay more -- they can hire retirees at low wages who just want something to do and don't want to lower their Social Security. So, you have a state with depressed wages to begin with and then add in people willing to take low wages because they're bored. I do wonder how young families manage to survive in surrounding neighborhoods.
