In response to my previous message, I went back and reread the OP, and then realized I misunderstood, the post after mine was very clear on the plastic strip. However, the few times I installed shingles (back up north), I never recalled seeing this strip, but this may be specific to a manufacturer. In any case, after reading all of the replies, it may have been defective installation of the shingles. I live in Pinellas, and I have specifically looked at several of the houses in the vicinity of ours, and have not seen any damage to the roof or shingles. The winds were so strong during IRMA that I would not be surprised if there were highly localized areas of higher speed winds that caused the damage mentioned above.
