I wonder how East Palo Alto became such as spot for crime? It is quite close to Stanford. It probably was not the struggling people who live there and who want to get out of there quickly.
It does look like it has improved since I was driving through there in the mid 1980s.

"I don't think East Palo Alto is that bad. It just looks bad because it is surrounded by some of the nicest communities in the country.
If you're careful you are unlikely to get mugged. (Don't go to the bad parts alone on foot at night) If you're in a gated community you're unlikely to get burgled.
In the off chance your house does get robbed, how much stuff would you lose? 5K? Rent is ~$600 / month cheaper in EPA, so even if you got robbed every year you'd come out ahead."

I personally had the experience of subletting a house in EPA this past summer (not in a gated community, but in one of the 'nicer' parts of EPA) and while for the most part it was fine (arguably), our house was broken into two days before we moved out and a lot of personal belongings (primarily electronics) were stolen. "East Palo Alto experienced a large drop in crime and complaints against police in 2016, as well as a huge spike in the number of arrests, according to police.
The city saw a 35 percent reduction in violent crime (homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault) over 2015 and a 25 percent drop in homicides. There were three homicides last year, two of which occurred in the street (one on Tulane Street, the other on Illinois Street) and one which was a “family violence homicide on East O’Keefe” Street, according to the city’s website. There were four homicides in 2015.
Nonviolent crime (burglary, larceny, auto theft and arson) dropped by 19 percent.
