We had the opposite experience of jnieman.
We put a topper on an overly firm mattress, and it made it wonderful.
We had to experiment with the size from 1/2 inches to 3 inches.
For us, the 1 1/2 inches was perfect, with gel beads for cooling.
Each to his own.
