There are some excellent Pepper Sprays etc. on the market. They are legal and effective. We took a course with the Police Dept. in another state. We have a certificate. If someone enters your private space, as in a car jacking, then you hold the spray out and say STOP! THAT IS ALL.
Then do the spray, then you can walk closer and do a backup second spray to guarantee your safety.
There are several brands. Kimber makes an excellent spray unit, powerful, two shots, potent. A big dog attacked me on my bike, in Oregon, lots of big dogs on the run. I got him, the owner ran out cussing, I told him to stop and he stopped. Lucky him.
