I have an insurance card from my auto insurance company, but that doesn't prove that I am insured because I may be behind in my payments. I am a pretty careful person, but I think it would be way too much trouble to verify that every contractor I hire actually has current insurance and how much they are covered for. When you have a sofa or tv delivered to your house, do you require the store to prove they have current insurance? How often do you verify that the company who cuts your grass is current on his insurance? Legally, I believe that as long as you do business with a bona fide company, insured or not, you at very low risk for being successfully sued for liability. Also, that is what your homeowners liability insurance is for, and I have plenty of that.
