LOL. Who is brainwashed??
I must be a capitalist tool too? But wait, I have several nice houses, nice cars, nice boat, my kids went to expensive universities, I have zero debt, and I retired at age 54...
I started my working life at a non union company in the construction industry. In 1982 (age 19) I was making $8.50 an hour working for that non union company (that was "big money" for starting pay back then). I worked there for 6 years, I had my first house built during the 4th year of working there. I left that company to open my own non union company in 1989.
For years; I would send the union a Christmas card thanking them for driving my company's prices up (I met the local union President at a picket on one of my jobs in his home town, it became a joke between us - till he passed away).
My company thrived as the union faltered and had to spend more and more money advertising, their lack of foresight has caused them to lose significant market share.
The internet hurt the union as sites like Dodge Report and Isquare came along. Those sites would share what company was awarded the work on projects, and the customers rating on the work done, with other General Contractors that have similar projects (ie: my company was awarded the work on a bank building and we did great work, they are looking for someone to do work on their bank building project - my company looks to be a good option). Lack of performance based pay and the "us against them" culture looks to be a kiss of death for the union in the construction industry.
Today the union is more interested in auditing "signatory" companies that paid the employee overtime, but might have shorted the union.
Their other wasted focus is the revenues from required training for the apprentices (they charge the apprentice to learn how to do their job)...they should be focusing on providing 8 hours work for 8 hours pay, and getting rid of the all too many bad apples they have.
My company did not have to be significantly lower in price, we would be awarded projects being close in price. I could offer something the union could not = productivity! Time is one thing you can never get back in life, and time is very valuable to the developer on these projects.
Things have changed and the union has not adapted well to its surroundings. I never wanted them to disappear (after all they did facilitate my prices going up) but I would not be surprised if they did die out like the dinosaur.
OH...I am better looking than you, my dad could beat up your dad any day of the week, and my mom never wore combat boots...you pro union thug you!
