Most insecticides are not nicotine based; some are. However, the nicotine you mention comes from tobacco and you don't know what other compounds are in the tobacco.

Nicotine is highly toxic to mammals and humans are mammals.

I'm no scientist, but the majority of homeowners do not care what chemicals they use or how they use them or how often they use them. They see one bug a month and think they need a pest control contract.
Even worse than that are those who use pesticides as a preventive!
Absolute insanity!!!

And your point regarding a pack of Marlboro Reds? I don't know anyone who thinks about what a bug feels like when it dies.
