What they do understand is term limits and that would, in my opinion, be an easier sell.
My proposal would be to increase Representative terms to 4 years with a 2 term limit and limit Senators to 2 terms.
It takes 34 states to call an article V constitutional convention. The last attempt was in 1983 when 32 states were on board for a balanced budget ammendment.

A) Repealing the 17th is a simple concept that just takes a few $million in marketing to get the cause/effect concepts across.
B) Term Limits: go for it. I purposely avoid it for tactical reasons: it points too directly at the political class and its perqs. Republican apparatchiks will pay lip service to it and do nothing. If not Constitutional, the "mere laws" will be bi-partisan overturned at earliest convenience, as Bloomberg did, as was done in, I think, Idaho.
