I'm not sure what landmass has to do with it. Germany is like a state in the U.S. with 83 million people in it. Oh, wait, there aren't any states in the U.S. with 83 million people. But if you add together California, Texas, and Pennsylvania you can get there. But those 3 states' GDP's dwarf Germany's.
The EU has a "much bigger" economy because it has more people. However, the per capita GDP in the U.S. is "much bigger" than in the E.U.
