I've had the flu twice in the past 10-15 years. The last incidence was a confirmed case as I was tested. They can do that now in under 10 minutes. Both episodes began abruptly with fever, extreme fatigue, and body aches - sometimes head to toe, like even my hair follicles. To me, these are more reliable indicators that one has the flu. Respiratory symptoms could be anything. If that's all you have, I would bet there is a good chance it is not the flu.
Many of my co-workers, in fact almost all, have had severe respiratory illnesses this seasons lasting a month or longer. None have been confirmed as the flu.
