I had a "hard" orthotic made by my podiatrist through a mold of my foot. It was made of some type of resin.....I was never able to wear it without pain no matter what i did (short time, gradual wear, continual wear). I had another one made of more flexible material with build up spots at both the arch and heel...that one I can wear comfortably with no pain.

Perhaps ask your podiatrist about alternative orthotics.
