The older homes are mostly done the same way, except that in many cases you will find 15 pound felt used instead of house wrap.
If you look along the bottom row of your vinyl siding, you should see both the sheathing and the wrap. You can also often slide the top row of the siding back and forth enough to also see this.
On a 20 year old house, often you will find places where landscapers have damaged the siding enough that you can also see what you are looking for.
