In the south it’s more of a statement than a threat. It means pay attention to what I just told you to do. Same as “do I need to stop this car”, instead it was do I have to slap you into next Tuesday. My mammy, she was 90, used to say it when one did something really bad, of course she laughed when she said it, unless you were disrespectful and then you got the look.
