Bruce, SHOULD be furring strips, but you might find metal studs. Go to the building department, Pinellas Plaza, go in the library entrance, turn right, go to end of hall they are on the left. They can send you your house plans by email. This should give you the spacing, I would expect 2 foot. A stud finder will work for both wood and metal, so you can use one of these. I have one and can give you a hand. You can determine the type (wood or metal) by using a small drill bit (1/16") and drilling a pilot hole.
Drywall will by 5/8", furring strip will typically be (1") nominal 3/4 inch, so 1 1/4" screws should work well for the wood strips, if you have metal studs, you may be able to get away with a pilot hole and sheet metal screws. as long as the quilt is not too heavy.
