Waiting For Someone To Mention
Unless I missed it, I have yet to hear either of the candidates or any of the pundits discuss the probability that many of these campaign promises--particularly John McCain's--could actually be enacted.
As I've mentioned here before, McCain can propose a laundry list of attractive proposals as long as he wishes. But with an increasingly heavy Democratic majority in both houses of Congress and a number of Republicans who might not be cooperative as the result of McCain's "maverick ways" in the past, it seems to me that few of McCain's proposals have much of a chance of enactment.
Obama has a much better chance of delivering on his campaign promises. But the risk in his case is that some dumb or damaging legislation could be passed. If I knew for a fact that the influence of lobbyists would be reduced or eliminated in the incoming Congress, I might even feel comfortable that a majority of elected officials wouldn't actually do something stupid or damaging. I do think that they're smarter than that. But with the special interest lobbyists lurking close to the capitol, I keep thinking that anything could still happen. Members of Congress may be smart, but their collective character and morality still makes me nervous.
But what isn't anyone discussing this?
