This isn't true.

I recently replaced my over-the-range microwave - Whirlpool, new in 2011. The opening for a duct to the rooftop exhaust vent is inside the wall behind the microwave.

The replacement Whirlpool microwave is not "sealed." There is a plate on the back of the microwave, located where the microwave meets the opening. Remove the plate and the microwave exhaust fan blows upward through the roof vent. If there is no roof vent, the plate is left in place and the exhaust fan blows into the kitchen.
