We have saved a LOT of money on cars because of this. We have an older Highlander and it is probably our favorite car for the comfortable ride and versatility. The Honda Fit is a very roomy car for such a small vehicle. It also offers a great ride for a small car. We test drove one while in Florida last time. If I thought I could get away with it for long rides that would possibly be the car we would purchase for TV. I'm looking at Subarus too. Although again, I hate to veer away from Toyotas.

As far as the Ford Escape - here's all I know. My cousin bought a Honda CRV and then generously decided to give it to her niece who needed a vehicle at the time. She then went and bought a Ford Escape for herself. I bet she barely had the Ford for more than 2 years and went back and traded it in for another Honda CRV. She said there was no comparison. If you're leaning in that direction you might want to check that out. Unless Toyota has gotten better with their RAV-4, I haven't been happy with that over the years. Just not as good a ride as some of the other smaller SUVs on the market.
