The Honda Fit is a very roomy car for such a small vehicle. It also offers a great ride for a small car. We test drove one while in Florida last time. If I thought I could get away with it for long rides that would possibly be the car we would purchase for TV. I'm looking at Subarus too. Although again, I hate to veer away from Toyotas.
As far as the Ford Escape - here's all I know. My cousin bought a Honda CRV and then generously decided to give it to her niece who needed a vehicle at the time. She then went and bought a Ford Escape for herself. I bet she barely had the Ford for more than 2 years and went back and traded it in for another Honda CRV. She said there was no comparison. If you're leaning in that direction you might want to check that out. Unless Toyota has gotten better with their RAV-4, I haven't been happy with that over the years. Just not as good a ride as some of the other smaller SUVs on the market.
Sorry, K, I know too many words, but we're talking cars here. Important business......

We have had the opposite experience with Toyota. My husband bought a truck and it gave him NOTHING but problems. Then a few years ago my friend bought a Camry and 3 months after she had it it caught on fire. She fought with Toyota for several months and they finally gave her a new one. A few months ago after having the brakes serviced she drove it through a storefront. Go figure!
