When I crank up my home theater, I just make sure to have the windows and doors closed and do so before 10 PM. Most of the houses here are pretty well insulated for heat but that same insulation helps for audio too. As far as bothering neighbors, that has not so far been a problem. However, that may be partly due to the fact that I have had my closest neighbors over for "movie nights". Once they've experienced and enjoyed a decent home sound system, folks are often more tolerant of a bit of "sonic spillover" when I'm cranking it up a bit.
