My employees were given a choice whether to come in at double pay usually starting at 5:00 AM so we could still get home at a somewhat reasonable hour or take the day off, some chose to work 8 hours, others a half day and the rest not at all. Sometimes it just has to be done. Based on the financial condition of Winn Dixie, they are most likely trying to bring as many dollars in as possible to help them survive. If they don't survive this girl and many others will be looking for new jobs and thankfully there are many of them now available or will soon be available when all the new retail stores open.
The operative phrase in there is "AT Double Pay". People don't mind working holidays so much when they get time and 1/2 or double for it, to make up for missing out on family time. Yes, lots of people work holidays, and decent companies make it worth it.
