A lot of cars in the last few years can use a navigation app that's run a smart phone. You plug the phone into a USB port (some connect wirelessly) and the the app runs on the screen in the dashboard of the car.

So you see the map and directions on the dashboard screen as you would with the builtin navigation for the care. Waze is an app that a lot of cars support... I think the last few years of Ford's support the Waze app. It's not always completely seamless but at least you've got the map on the dashboard screen.
