OK, most separate GPS units do not need connectivity to the cellular system (no impact to data plans), also, they do not report your location or any other information. These use satellite signals only, and depending on where you are going, I have had occasions where I had no cell service, hence, no maps, and had to guess where I was going. GPS on the other hand worked flawlessly, as long as you have access to a satellite signal.

However, there is a much broader question here, how long will a car manufacturer continue to support ALL of the on board computer systems? Imagine, you buy I nice new shine 2018 car loaded to the gills with sensors, safety features, etc, and a few years in the future the manufacturer says, oh well we are no longer supporting this model, my car just became a potential piece of junk. Now if you think I am being paranoid, consider that the car companies are starting to move to the leasing only option, something to think about....
