I loved seeing all those balloons and not for NOTHING. I had traveled from Reno, Nevada to Denver about 4 times in 1983-1984 always taking different routes and sometimes using the roads least taken. Fearlessness can get you in trouble though. Pulled into one city where they had no gas as they had lost electricity and I decided to try to get to the next station with gas which was quite a distance away. At about ten at night I was going on fumes but it was downhill after I had had a long climb uphill. Finally got gas but they had no hotel. Later pulled into a rest stop at 2 in the morning or so and some creep tried to carjack me. I was half asleep but managed to get the car door away from him. He had threatened to slam it on my legs if I did not get out of the car. Thought for a split second about running him over but backed up instead. Only made it a hundred more miles or so before I had to pull over to sleep. I should have reported that incident to the police but did not. I was just extremely tired. This was on Highway 50 in eastern Nevada. And earlier on some highways in Utah that connect to it.

I do remember the man who attempted the carjacking as a white slender guy in dark slacks and a white shirt. Maybe about 5' 6" if that. Clean shaven and maybe around 35-45. He was running to a large RV when I was backing up. There were about six other vehicles in the rest stop. All dark though at 2 in the morning.
