It's a matter of perspective. He was very well staged to be "professorial" - camera angle, glasses, et cetera - so as to make the interview appear minimal and "talking down" to the interviewee. The difference in his technique versus what Tim Russert or others who don't make themselves the center being, but instead serve as the catalyst to information acquisition.
