Villagers giving their time and labor to make their community a better place set a record for volunteer hours last year. Volunteers with resident lifestyle groups donated 224,100 hours of their time in 2018, an increase of almost 20,000 hours from 2017, The Villages Recreation and Parks Department reported. To put that in perspective: 20,000 hours is the equivalent of 833 days. And the total number of hours donated last year equals the total number of hours in 25.6 years. Yet as staggering as those numbers are, they undoubtedly don’t capture the entirety of the community’s volunteer effort because many Villages groups hold additional fundraising and volunteer activities beyond the meetings the recreation department tracks.
