There's an interesting article about victims' remembrance in Sumter County on
The Villages Daily Sun's front page. The Sumter County victim's advocate kind of says that no two victims are alike which is also true in my experience but I define "victim/survivor" a lot more broadly than the state statutes would and not for NOTHING.

Some crimes touch a lot of people in many ways others not all that much unfortunately. Often it is what cases catch the public's eye and/or the media and which do not.
The article also covers victims' rights here in Sumter County and it history.
And a lot of crimes are never reported for many reasons.
I recall some law students while I was at the U of MN would share with me their stories of crimes against them and they had not reported these to the authorities or just told friends about them. There was also the possibility that they were playing some kind of angle. That was the response a lot of people had to me when I tried to tell my own story to some of them. That I was playing them for some reason.
