We asked our Uncle Jimmy, lifetime Fireman to tell us stories and he always changed the subject. We were under 10 and really didn't know better until we did it a second time. My Dad made it abundantly clear that it was off limits. Uncle Jimmy devoted his life to his job. Lived in the apartment building next to the Firehouse and took us down the Firepole from the sleeping quarters. COOL!
My Uncle Alvin was the Fire Chief for the town of Itasca. IL. They had to handle clean up of some of that terrible airplane crash out of O'Hare in 1979. And not for NOTHING. Itasca has planes over it from O'Hare at certain times of the day so he was reminded quite often each day by the sight and sounds of the jet planes. I spent Fall of 1994 helping out my WWII wounded uncle as he had lost part of his skull, an arm and a leg to a Panzer tree burst at Anzio in 1944. And it killed 6 out of 8 men in his scouting party. Caused
him to have hallucinations when he was elderly of his WWII men being in front of him.

Alvin passed away while I was there in Itasca in 1994 and they had a Fire Chief's funeral with fireman coming from a lot of places in Chicagoland.

I kind of had to become a fan of Da Bears when there.
