We asked our Uncle Jimmy, lifetime Fireman to tell us stories and he always changed the subject. We were under 10 and really didn't know better until we did it a second time. My Dad made it abundantly clear that it was off limits. Uncle Jimmy devoted his life to his job. I wouldn't want to be a structural Firefighter. NOTHING but risk from the word go.
Wildland firefighting is no picnic but it's what I know. No floors to collapse on you. No roofs coming down. No confined spaces. Unless someone really screws up and places you in a bad spot the biggest risk is usually from falling trees or branches.
Yes, we get to see plenty of wildlife but it's usually at a distance and they're trying to get to safety. Have seen a few snake bites over the years and of course plenty of Abby encounters on the roads but other than that NOTHING serious.
