You and your husband's "impressions"...are correct.

Although some like to talk about "the rules" when negotiating them and tout their knowledge about how they are supposed to be navigated, in reality...the roundabouts ARE a bit of a free-for-all.

Here's an old thread showing how a lot of our roundabouts are actually different...with different signage/instructions.

What helps though, is the slower speeds of our main roads and traveling in the same direction while in the RA itself, which means the higher speed 'T-Bone collisions' along with 'head-on's (the most dangerous types)...are minimized.
