"Visiting" isn't so bad, as long as you don't have to...live there. 
Having some close friends who've spent many years in Fairbanks and having been fortunate to have visited them in both summer (89 degrees) and winter (53 below), I can attest to it taking a special breed (half-nuts?  )... to live there year around.
