I think one of the goals for the FedEx cup is to encourage the best players to play in more tournaments during the year, and for them to continue to show up for tournaments after the majors are over for the year. In that respect, I think the FedEx cup has been successful.

Also, note that the top player doesn't actually have a 10 stroke lead over the entire field. There are only 30 players, and he only has a 10 stroke advantage over a few of the players at the bottom. His lead over the second place guy was only 2 strokes.
