“I am very mindful of the fact that sportsmen in America may have gone hunting with their fathers, their grandfathers, their mothers, their grandmothers, and that this is part of a tradition and a way of life that has to be preserved. And there’s nothing that I will do as president of the United States that will in any way encroach on the ability of sportsmen to continue that tradition.”

What he is against is illegal handguns that result in unnecessary violence in our cities. I think that is just being smart. Actually, its one of the reasons I dropped out of NRA -- I think they have gone over the line. We have a tremendous amount of violence in this country. Some common sense needs to be applied to who can carry guns, and what guns they can carry. Like, why does anyone need to carry an assault rifle?
rekop,

What concerns me is senator Obamas interpetation of what constitutes "basis second ammendement rights". What does that mean, restricting our rights to the ownership of single-shot rifles and shotguns?

As far as the NRA goes, I was not aware that they supported the "illegal use of handguns that result in the unnecessary violence in our cites", as your post implies. I also highly doubt that the NRA and its members are the main perpetrators of this countries gun violence, but I could be wrong. They can be a pretty rowdy bunch.

I also think that it would be rather diifficult to legally "carry an assault rifle", owing to the fact that to legally carry a weapon in the state of Florida (as well as every other state that I know of) it MUST be carried concealed on your person. But, I guess if your pockets are big enough, anything is possible.

As far as Senator Obama's legislation to restricts gun ownership, it would be implemented during his second term when he no longer has anything to fear from the gun lobby.
