I just had whoever was sitting with me in the card repeat whatever the GPS voice said, so I could understand the directions without having to struggle to listen. They kept the volume down so THEY could hear it. We only had to pull over a couple of times because the passenger said "take a left" and I ended up taking a left into a parking lot instead of the street right after it!
