We immediately noticed that having no gate arms was dangerous because as we carefully moved into the crossing, a car came off Morse and came through the "open gate" without even slowing down. Had I not been moving slowly and carefully, we could have easily been in an unfortunate accident. The gate arms do two things. One is they slow down auto's and trucks, even requiring them to stop before the gate arm goes up. Two, is they give the cart driver a visual sign that the way is potentially clear if the gate is down; danger if it is up.
