We went with podocarpus on both sides of our birdcage/pool as it is relatively easy to care for, will grow into a full privacy hedge, and we can prune it to the height we want. We just fertilize it and prune it a couple times per year. They were planted two years ago and have almost doubled in size. By the end of next summer we will have excellent privacy hedges.

Just be sure to leave enough space between the birdcage and whatever you plant so it has room to grow and will still allow you to walk between the plants and the birdcage to trim your plants.
