large restaurant/Club gave me a simple menu for pasta sauce that is a great Italian sauce (1) finely cut 2/3rd of onion fried for a short time in small amount of olive oil, (2) all of a can of "Cento" crushed tomatoes, (3) add a little garlic salt. Cooked to your level of thickness. It is simple, takes 10-20 minutes and it is like being in Italy, You could add basil but it is not necessary. This sauce does not contain any chemicals, or other additives and is real Italian and cost less than the expensive brands with all of their additives that are to preserve and protect.
My two cents - basil plants are almost always available at Publix. They are inexpensive. Here they grow like weeds. Fresh basil is glorious on many Italian dishes. Just cut a few leaves off and you are in business.
