Something must be out of line in the Settings Department of your phone. I just did exactly what you described on an iPhone 8 Plus, XS Max & I think it is an iPhone 11. All of them opened the thread on the first tap.
Apple Customer Service 800-692-7753. They will fix you up in under 15 minutes for free instead of just poking and hoping which can get you in big trouble. Good Luck!
