Once upon a time, it was impossible for bumblebees to fly. But since they didn't know that, they flew anyway.
This theory has since been debunked and explained by actual science.
Once upon a time, there was no scientific evidence that putting a bar of soap at the foot of your bed would do anything other than make your toes smell nice in the morning. But your legs didn't know this, and they stopped cramping up anyway.
Some day, science will have an explanation for it.
For now, it's enough to know that it really does tend to work.
